What The Electorate Wants

In March 2015, more than a year before the first Presidential primaries, more voters valued a hypothetical candidate with “experience and a proven record” (50%) than one who had “new ideas and a different approach” (43%). Just six months later, those numbers had flipped – 55% said it was more important for a candidate to have new ideas, while 37% valued experience and a proven record.

The notion of looking outside of the “traditional candidate” has taken new life over the last year, with significantly more newer candidates throwing their hats in the political ring and having success with voters. What has caused this shift? How are new candidates for office using their ideas and perspectives to court voters? Why do ideas matter more in today’s climate, and what are the factors that campaigns think about when trying to reach voters?
