Cultural Diversity In Sports

At the conclusion of the World Cup, France emerged as the winner with what could be considered a pan-African all star team, with a large share being Muslim.

Social media highlighted the domestic racial and religious politics happening in France currently, in an effort underscore the importance of the continent of Africa to its win.

The French government was quick to point out that they are not African athletes but French athletes. Including the report this week that Mesut Ozil, a German Muslim player from Turkey, is retiring as a result of Germany’s xenophobia to its players. This episode will explore the debate of race, region, and identity through the lens of sports.
